The insights page summarizes your transactions for a date range, one transaction type at a time. Open it from the Transactions page; it lives at Transactions insights.
Insights answers "how much, broken down by what" for a single window. If you instead want the same numbers spread across consecutive periods — a grid of those groupings against weeks, months, or years — use Transactions reports.
Choosing what you see
- Date range — a from – to button in the header sets the window. Your choice is remembered per browser, and the page opens on the last month through today by default.
- Expense / income toggle — a segmented switch picks which transaction type the page analyzes. Everything below reflects the selected type and range.
- Gross / net / tax switch — picks which side of a transaction's optional tax split every figure is summed on. Gross is the default and totals amounts as entered. Net excludes tax; transactions you never split count their whole amount, so this still covers the full ledger. Tax counts the tax alone, so only transactions you actually split appear — the transaction count and daily averages then describe that subset. See Recording tax.
What it shows
-
Stat cards — headline totals for the chosen type over the range.
-
Breakdown — one card of horizontal bars, each sized by its share of the range total. Two controls in the card header shape it:
- A grouping dropdown — by description, tag, client, project, task, or currency, the same set Transactions reports offers. There is no "by type" grouping because the expense/income toggle already scopes the page to one type.
- Single color / Multicolor — switch the bar coloring.
Both choices are remembered per browser, matching the Time tracker insights breakdown.
By tag uses your configured tag colors, and a transaction carrying several tags contributes its full amount to each — so tag rows can add up to more than the range total. Every other grouping counts each transaction once, because a transaction links at most one client, project, and task. A transaction with nothing to group by gets a catch-all row instead: No description, Untagged, or Unassigned.
Exporting
The Export action carries the current type, range, and gross/net/tax basis to the insights exports page, where you generate a downloadable report. Exports can cover every grouping, including the by type split the page itself doesn't show; the picker starts on whichever grouping you were viewing. The grouping picker is format-aware: PDF gives each grouping its own report section, XLS puts each grouping on its own tab, and CSV holds a single grouping. The generated report states which basis it used, so a net-basis export can't be mistaken for a gross one. Exports run in the background; see Export data.
On mobile
- The insights screen renders the breakdown as one interactive donut chart — tap a slice or legend row to highlight it — rather than the web bar/list layout.
- Pick the grouping, the income/expense type, and the timeframe (day, week, month, year, or custom); the totals and the donut update in place. Export runs from the web app.
