A transaction can carry one receipt image. It lives on the transaction itself, in a Receipt panel beside the form fields, and it is the proof behind the amount rather than a second copy of the data.
This is not the same thing as Scanning receipts, which reads a photo on your phone and creates a transaction from what it finds. Scanning produces a transaction; attaching stores the image. On mobile the two meet: a receipt you scanned is also kept as the new transaction's attachment.
Attaching one
On the web, open a new transaction or an existing one and use the Receipt panel. Drag an image onto the dropzone, or click it to browse. The panel stages your change — the upload happens when you press Save, so a receipt participates in the form's unsaved-changes guard like every other field, and Cancel discards it. On a brand-new transaction the image goes up immediately after the transaction is created.
On mobile, open the transaction's edit sheet and tap the receipt tile. Ceum asks whether to take a photo or choose from your photo library, and uploads the image as soon as you pick it.
Accepted formats are JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC/HEIF and AVIF, up to 5 MB per image. The format is read from the image's own bytes rather than from its file name, so a photo the phone mislabelled still stores correctly. Anything larger or of another type is refused with a message before it is sent.
Receipts count towards your plan's storage allowance. Replacing one only counts the difference in size, not the whole new image.
What you can do with an attached receipt
The panel shows the receipt as a preview:
- View full size — click the preview for a full-screen viewer, which can also open the image in a new tab, print it, or download it.
- Download — saves the image under its stored file name. On mobile the equivalent is Save to device, which hands the file to the system share sheet.
- Change receipt — pick another image; the old one is deleted.
- Remove — deletes the receipt. There is no undo, and the image is not kept anywhere else.
The receipt is hidden while privacy mode is on, on the web and on mobile alike: a placeholder replaces the image, the full-size viewer will not open, and downloading or saving it is refused.
Plans
Attaching a receipt, and replacing one, are part of the Starter, Plus and Pro plans. Reading is not gated. A receipt already on a transaction stays viewable, downloadable and removable on any plan, including after a downgrade — the panel keeps its Download and Remove buttons and adds a short note that replacing needs a paid plan. On a transaction with no receipt, the panel shows an upgrade notice in place of the dropzone.
A share link to a transaction includes its receipt for the same reason: the recipient is reading, not uploading.
The Free retention window
The retention table under Data retention gives transaction attachments a 365-day window on Free and "kept" on every paid plan. That 365 days is a grace period, not a Free-plan capability. A Free account cannot attach a receipt in the first place, so it has nothing to accumulate. The window is what a paid account's existing receipts get after a downgrade or cancellation: a year to download them or move back up a plan, after which they are deleted along with the stored image.
Receipts and exports
Receipts are never included in transaction exports. The exports page produces tabular data only — CSV, XLS or PDF of the columns you pick — and says so on the page when you have the feature. To keep copies of the images, download them from the transactions themselves. See Export data.
On mobile
- Camera or library — attaching offers both, after asking for the matching permission.
- A scanned receipt attaches itself. When you create a transaction with receipt scanning, the photo is saved as that transaction's attachment once it is created. This needs a connection: a transaction you save offline is queued without its image, so attach it from the edit sheet after the outbox syncs. See Offline support.
- Save to device — the viewer hands the image to the system share sheet, so you can file it wherever you keep receipts.
- Locked but visible — without the feature, the attach control is still shown, with a padlock and a tap that explains why.
